EDITORIAL FROM THE FEBRUARY 2013 NEWSLETTER

by Lindamarie Peabody

Well, here we are again marching into 2013 with the Postal Service heading toward supposed financial disaster and the only solution they can think of is to cut service down to five days a week and close as many post offices as the public will allow. This infuriates me when I think of all the possible solutions that are not even being explored by upper management and Congress. We have put many ideas out on the table to help relieve us of the prefudning mandate and expand our services into different markets, but once again we are met head-on with bosses who see cutting service as the only option. It seems to me that the post office is deliberately trying to alienate our customers by withholding stamps from retail operations, shortening the hours so no one can actually make it to the post office when they finish work, and pushing online services down consumers' throats so that tehy will never use the Post Office again for any of their mailing needs. In my opinion, it is all geared towards trying to reduce revenues at Post Offices and then having the financial proof to show why they have to close these offices to save money. This is where all of you come in! We need everyone to make a grass roots effort, just like we did last year in getting President Obama re-elected (I am so proud of all of you who voted), to get the word out to the people that five day delivery in any form is bad for everyone. Tell everyone you see that many more people will be out of work, which is true because they will ultimately get rid of all the carrier positions who covered the six days and we will inevitably need less clerks to sort the mail. All the general public (and sadly some postal workers) think is that we will have weekends off and won't that be awesome! It is this short-sighted attitude that will ultimately lead to privatization and the demise of the Postal Service. If we allow Saturday delivery to go away without a fight, it will be a sad day for all of us. Please let your elected representatives, family, friends and all of your customers know that we are against this and that Donahue has no authority to change delivery frequency without the go-ahead from Congress. I only hope we can stop it before it is too late.

In other news, the Children's Holiday party was a great success and a fun time was had by all. Thanks to all the little elves and Santa Claus who made it happen once again! Also, I want to remind everyone that all mail for the Tri-County Area Local will now be sent to the 801 Yale Avenue Suite 519 Swarthmore PA 19081 address.

Finally, I would like to wish all of my friends (fly and TP...family) who retired on January 31st the best of luck and many years of happiness. I will miss you all very much and you are definitely not forgotten, as I try to look up every piece of mail (on that tiny incorrect scheme) that comes into the Media Post Office one by one at 7:00 a.m. in the morning. Keep your cell phones on around this time if I need to ask you any of the exceptions, as this is getting ridiculous now! Take care and keep in touch somehow!

In union solidarity,
